Historical notes:
John Fitch, an inventor known for his adaptation of James Watt's steam engine for use in a boat in 1787, published this map, the first detailed delineation of the territory west of the Appalachian Mountains, to finance the building of a commercial steamboat on the Delaware River. As early as 1780, Fitch had been employed as a deputy surveyor ; his map, perhaps the only one known to have been made, engraved, and printed by the same person, was instrumental in the eventual development of that territory.Map dedicated to Thomas Hutchins, Esq.
