Historical notes:
Includes the valleys of the Missouri River and its affluents, the central Rockies and the Gila, Colorado, and Columbia Rivers leading to the Pacific coast in Oregon, explored as a result of the expedition President Thomas Jefferson entrusted to Meriwether Lewis and William Clarke in 1805-6 to map the Louisiana Purchase. Their reports of the lower Columbia and the land south of the River's upper reaches are supplemented by results of the surveys later carried out by David Thompson for the North West Company; descending the whole length of the Columbia from its source to the south, he reached the Pacific in 1811. Also marked is the track in the waters of the Alaska and the northwestern Pacific coast of Captain James Cook's third expedition, and extensive routes, portages and water courses in the valleys of the Red, Saskatchewan and Coppermine Rivers in Hudson Bay Company's lands in what are now Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Canadian Northwest Territories.
