Described as the curtain before the plays, the page shows a older man with wings (Time?) showing a young man his reflection in a mirror, although the young man refused to look at it. They are surrounded by caricatures of a man or excavator with a shovel and a fisherman with a net, produce, caught fish, a caged bird, a barrel of crabs, birds, a monk’s head, spectacles or glasses, and a bull’s head. The youth points to a globe encircled by a snake holding its tail in its mouth. The old man is “Gryn Chagrin,” or the nemesis of the Mississippi and South Sea companies, holding up a mirror to the face of a youth (or speculator) and surrounded by the follies of the times.

Narrative description Investment schemes.[The rising and falling of the share-dealers.] Images include in the central image a view of the court of the Tuileries where two men have fought a duel and one lies dead on the payment. Below this image is another which appears to have been nailed to the first, titled “Quinquempoix.” with a street scene of people exchanging pieces of paper. Quinquempoix is the name of a street in [Amsterdam] which had the headquarters of the Compagnie des Indes. These two images are surrounded by vignettes of 1) a ship landing on a shore and 2) men digging in the earth or mining. At the top is a portrait of John Law of Lauriston flanked by a wolf devouring a sheep and a monkey. Two medallions show the wheel of fortune with men being crushed under it and another showing white men trying to scrub a black man with whitewash. On either side of the image of Quinquempoix is Mercury or the symbol of commerce with his winged hat and caduceus turning away from the viewer and a man representing debt harassing a man in rags representing poverty.

This plate was produced from one showing the Duc de Vend�me and was a satire on the defeat of the French in 1706 at the Siege of Menin.

This print was repurposed from one originally used to illustrate the distress of Louis XIV having lost the battle of Ramillies, May 12, 1706. In this print, the artist's name has been removed along with other inscriptions above the heads of the two men on the left. Madame Compagnie replaces Madame de Maintenon from the original print.
