General Note:
Ms codex.; Composed in one roughly contemporary secretarial hand with occasional notes in a different hand.; Attributed to Thomas Nairne by an inscription present in the British Library copy and by NUC pre-1956.; Sometimes attributed to Jean Pierre Purry, founder of the ultimately unsuccessful Colony of Purrysburg, along the Savannah River, who died in South Carolina of malaria.; Manuscript copy of: A letter from South Carolina; giving an account of the soil, air, product, trade, government, laws, religion, people, military strength, &c. of that province; together with the manner and necessary charges of settling a plantation there, and the annual profit it will produce. / Written by a Swiss gentleman, to his friend at Bern, printed in London, 1710. This manuscript copy omits pages 3-6, 58-63, and some other shorter passages in the 1710 London edition.; Certain in text allusions suggest authorship by a Swiss person, however, they are sporadic and the intent of the letter is the promote the circulation of the letter among the Swiss cantons and Germanic areas. Though North Carolina's borders are defined, the text refers almost wholly to South Carolina and is phrased in the light of the ongoing war with France and Spain.; See Vail, R.W.G. Voice of the old frontier, 313.; See Hanson, L. Contemporary printed sources for British and Irish economic history, 1701-1750, 1162.; See Kress Library of Business and Economics. Catalogue, with data upon cognate items in other Harvard libraries, S.2501.; See Brown, J.C. Bibliotheca Americana, III:143.; See European Americana, 710/101.; See English short title catalogue T37925.
