Imprint from colophon.; Dedication, leaf A1 verso, signed: Laurentius Friess.; Intended to accompany: Carta marina, the author's version of the Waldseemüller marine chart. Fries began work on a reissue of Martin Waldseemuller's famous 1516 wall map (likewise called Carta marina) after completing work on the 1522 edition of Ptolemy. Fries' map was apparently completed in 1525, but no complete surviving copy exists. See: Leo Bagrow, "Fragments of the 'Carta Marina' by Laurentius Fries, 1524," Imago Mundi, XIV (1959), p.111-2" for more information on the fragments of Fries' 1525 map in the University of Leiden Library. Fries' 1525 map was reissued in Munich in 1530 under the title "Carta marina navigatoria Portugalien navigationes: atque tocius cogniti orbis terrae marisque formae naturam situm et terminos noviter recognitos et ab antiquorum traditione differentes hec generaliter monstrat, 1525" and the only known example is held in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich.; "Von America ein teyl dauon hie beschrieben", leaves A6 verso-B1, taken from Amerigo Vespucci's first voyage.; Signatures: A⁶ B⁸ C-E⁶ (E6 verso blank); Some illustrations are double-page; all are hand-colored.; Errors in foliation throughout.; Includes index.
