notes:
In 1768 the leading print dealers of London jointly published a set of American views under the collective title, Scenographia Americana. The views in these prints were made from drawings that were drawn on the spot, often by military artists. This print is held separately. Thomas Pownall was appointed colonial governor of Massachusetts during the French and Indian wars. He argued against unfair taxation without representation and, as a result, was transferred to South Carolina in 1760, although he returned to England that year without serving as governor.
