notes:
True valerian is native to Europe and Asia, but introduced to the Americas. This may be Epilobium coloratum, a type of willow herb, or another plant. Cornut was a Parisian physician who never set foot on American soil, but he obtained specimens from the French traders and explorers for his garden. The inclusion of roots in the illustrations reveals the origin of his interest in medical botany.
