Text describes a beautiful and strange bird like a woodpecker, colored yellow and black with red markings on the cheeks, with a large crest [perhaps a Pale-crested woodpecker (Celeus lugubris)?]. Cf. 0656-23. Thevet, a Franciscan monk, traveled to Brazil with Nicolas Durand, chevalier de Villegagnon, stayed ten weeks, and wrote his book from his own observations and those of others.
