notes:
|
Text describes the prefecture of Rio Grande (do Norte) and the fort built there on the Potengi. In 1597, the Portuguese built a fortress on the banks of the Potengi River. Begun by Alburquerque Maranhão in 1598, the fort was named Forte dos Santos Reis (or Fort of the Three Wise Men). The Dutch captured and held the fort (which they named Van Ceulen [Keulen] Fort) from 1633 to 1654.
