notes:
Betula rubra or red birch is also known as black or river birch, now Betula nigra. It is native to all of North America. It grows along the banks of streams. Michaux recommended its introduction to Europe on the basis of its ability to grow in hot climates.André Michaux and his son François-André were sent in 1785 by the French government to study the forest resources of North America. The French hoped to reforest their own country. François-André returned a few years later, also with a commission from the French government, and produced the Histoire des arbres forestiers ... Paris, 1810-13.
