notes:
Text describes the landing of the French on a promontory which they named Cape François, present-day Saint Augustine. They sailed northwards until they reached a river they named Dolphin River. When they reached the shore the natives greeted them in a friendly manner, but their chief, who never got up from his seat, gave the French a decorated skin. This image is derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 2, plate 1, and follows the special title page for Verscheyde scheeps-togten na Florida, door Pontius, Ribald, Laudonniere, Gourgues en andere: Gedaan Anno 1562 ... , Leiden, 1706.This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
