notes:
Although the new king's mother had died in 1816, it took two years for the regency in Lisbon to ratify the new political structure and assent to the "coronation" of João VI [John VI] as king of the united kingdoms of Portugal and Brazil in 1818. Since 1578 when Dom Sebastão [King Sebastian] was killed in battle, Portuguese kings have not, properly speaking, considered themselves to be crowned, but acclaimed. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.Image placed horizontally on page.
