notes:
João VI (1767-1826) was regent of Portugal until his mother's death in 1816. The Portuguese court had fled Lisbon to escape Napoleon in 1808, establishing the capital of the empire at Rio de Janeiro. He returned to Portugal in 1821. After a series of revolts, Brazil was acknowledged as independent from Portugal in 1822. Dom Pedro I (1798-1834) then became emperor of Brazil. He, in turn, was forced to step down in 1831. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
