notes:
[top] Text describes the laundry business that grew up around 1816 when visitors to Rio de Janeiro needed washing and ironing done but had no slaves to do that work. Poorer owners of slaves hired them out as laundresses. [bottom] Paulistas are the inhabitants of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. They were known for buying horses at Curitiba and taking them to Rio de Janeiro for sale. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
