notes:
Text states that around 1820 Swiss citizens were encouraged to immigrate to Brazil in the hope of improving its agricultural production. Given some of the best land and a certain number of slaves, they prospered. Cantagallo is about 100 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
