notes:
Text states that the tree in the foreground is Carica papaya or papaya. The Serra do Mar or Mountain Range of the Sea runs parallel to the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Espírito Santo to Santa Catarina. Much of its virgin rain forest has disappeared due to urbanization and deforestation. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.Lithographer is probably Charles Etienne Pierre Motte (French printmaker and draftsman, 1785-1836).Image placed horizontally on page.
