Fort Zeelandia was built by British colonists (and orginally called Fort Willoughby) in 1651. It was captured by the Dutch in 1667 and given its present name.Hartsinck, a director of the Dutch West India Company (VOC), had access to many VOC documents now lost, as well as to the papers of his father (who had been director of the Surinam Society for 25 years). He was also an official of the Admiralty in Amsterdam and a member of the Zeeland Academy of Sciences.
