notes:
The text describes the mountains called the Apalatcy [Appalachian Mountains], quite a distance from the French fort. The natives around there have perfected the art of collecting sand in the streams which are full of gold and take it down the River May to the Spanish. This image derived from Theodor de Bry, America, part 2, plate 42, and follows the special title page for Verscheyde scheeps-togten na Florida, door Pontius, Ribald, Laudonniere, Gourgues en andere: Gedaan Anno 1562 ... , Leiden, 1706. This collection of voyages consists of 127 parts, each having a special title page, separate pagination, and register. The voyages covering the period from 1246 to 1696 are arranged chronologically.
