Description:
Portrait of Christopher Columbus in 1493 with Columbus standing on the bridge of a ship filled with sailors and soldiers. The soldiers load treasure onto the ship. In the background are Haiti and two other islands identified as Isla S. Benito and Isla Desseada. Also shown are the whale from 04056-4, and other marine monsters. In the foreground is a company of monks headed by Fray Bernardo de Boyl (with galero, mitre, and crozier). Decorative elements include four vignettes of scenes involving conversion of the native Americans. Includes the royal coat of arms of Spain and of the papacy, a cross, a compass, an armillary sphere, map, spears, and a cannon.

notes:
Despite the author's and illustrator's protrayal of Fray Benardo de Boyl as a patriarch and bishop, Boyl was neither and remained in La Española or Hispaniola (present-day Santo Domingo and Haiti) only one year in 1493. Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1662), an Augsburg printmaker, is presumed to be the artist for all the images in this book not obviously derived from the Petits Voyages and Grands Voyages of Theodor de Bry. Honorius Philoponus is a pseudonym, probably for Caspar Plautius to whom this book is dedicated.
