notes:
Henderson sailed for Brazil hoping to obtain a position in the British legation. Having failed to do so, he instead gathered material for a book. Nevertheless, his text is based on Manuel Aires de Casal's Corografia brazilica of 1817.Dom João VI (1769-1826) arrived in Brazil in 1808, escaping from Napoleon's invasion of Portugal. He never ruled over an independent Brazil, but is considered the founder of Brazilian nationality.Image placed horizontally on page.
