notes:
Text notes that the plant was found about eight miles from the sea, had a thick, black root, and round leaves growing from black stems. Josselyn's observations are based on his stays in New England (Maine) in 1638-39 and 1663-71. His work is among the earliest on the natural history of the region. His notes on the medicinal uses of the plants are based on information from native Americans.Identification of the plant as Adiantum reniforme, a kind of fern, is taken from p. 123 of Edward Tuckerman's edition of Josselyn's work, (Boston, 1865), but true Adiantum reniforme is found primarily in Asia.
