notes:
The Charrúa were a nomadic people native to Uruguay, northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil. They were known for their bravery in killing jaguars for their skins. Most of the surviving and unassimilated Charrúa were ambushed and killed after having been invited to a meeting by Bernabé Rivera at Salsipuedes creek in 1831. Some of the very few remaining Charrúas were taken to be exhibited in France in 1833. Debret discusses how useful the Charrúas were in escorting people who hired them through dangerous country, but also states that they would happily rob unescorted travelers. The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.Lithographer is probably Charles Etienne Pierre Motte (French printmaker and draftsman, 1785-1836).Image placed horizontally on page.
