notes:
The story of the fictitious character Robinson Crusoe was based on the story of Alexander Selkirk who went to sea in 1704 with William Dampier and was put ashore on Juan Fernandez Island off of the coast of Chile. He survived there until he was rescued in 1709 by Woodes Rogers. Defoe puts Crusoe on an island off northeastern South America, probably Tobago. The engraver is probably John Lodge, British, active from 1782, died 1796.
