Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), colonial governor of the Brazilian colony of the Dutch West India Company, founded Mauritzstad as his principal residence. The town was built on Antonio Vaz Island outside the town of Recife, and included the castle of Vrijburg, and an observatory, from which the astronomer George Markgraf produced the first serious study of the southern sky. This image is derived from author's Rerum per octennium in Brasilia, Amsterdam, 1647.
