Joseph Paul Gaimard, a ship's surgeon and naturalist, was the scientific leader on La Recherche (1835-1836) during its expedition to the Arctic Sea and voyages to Iceland and Greenland. August Mayer was the artist brought along on the expedition. The bay of Vopnafjörður was first settled by Vikings in the late 9th century. The name Vopnafjörður literally means Weapon Fjord or Weapon Bay, and comes from the nickname of one of the settlers, Eyvindur vopni.
