The La Recherche Expedition of 1835-1836 was an expedition of the Commission scientifique du Nord. These volumes were published to report on her voyages to Iceland and Greenland. Skálholt was one of Iceland's two episcopal sees. Skálholtsskóli was founded at Skálholt in 1056 to educate clergy. The end of Catholicism in Iceland was marked by the execution of the last Catholic bishop in 1550 along with his two sons. Table explaining the plates describes how the streets of Skálholt were paved with lava stones or pumice.
