notes:
Governor Thomas Dale, after John Rolfe's successful marriage to Pocahontas, decided that he would marry the youngest of Powhatan's daughters. He sent Ralph Hamor to the native village to negotiate the settlement; Powhatan had already promised his daughter to another chief and refused to change his mind despite the gifts that were offered. A similar image was published by Johann Theodor de Bry, America. Pt. 10. This is the first issue of the first edition and was printed in the 13th part of Levnius Hulsius, Sammlung von sechs und zwanzig Schiffahrten, printed in 26 parts between 1598 to 1663.
