notes:
This image is taken from the Dutch edition of Vespucci's popular account published soon after Columbus's reports. The book describes a society of female warriors or Amazons in present-day Brazil. Vespucci's work, written following his voyage to Brazil in 1501, caused a sensation and was reprinted dozens of times in the early sixteenth century. The image is taken from the only known copy of this edition, which is noteworthy for its woodcut illustrations.
