Text states that soldiers tried to stop some people who were trying to spread the fire with torches.The fire took place during the night of September 21-22, 1776 on the southern tip of Manhattan island. The British under General Howe then occupied New York City until 1783. General Washington had withdrawn his troops to the northern part of Manhattan.
