notes:
The text describes the idols found in Virginia in 1587 who were worshipped as gods. This image is probably derived from engravings of Virginia Indians in Theodor de Bry, America, part 1.Vecellio's popular book on costumes included not only the dress of his native Venice, but clothing from ancient times and from the Americas along with social commentary about the illustrated people and their attire. The woodcuts for this book were created by Christoph Krieger.Image title taken from text.
