notes:
Sint Eustatius (Saint Eustatius), one of the Caribbean islands under the control of the Dutch during the eighteenth century, was at the center of the arms trade supplying the British colonies. The governor there was one of the first to accept the sovereignty of the United States. The British conquered the island in February 1781, but lost it to the French ten months later.Issued to commemorate the French military role in the American Revolution, this collection was one of the first few contemporary publications to illustrate scenes from that conflict. The artist was also known as Pierre-Clement Marillier.
