In August 1823, the enslaved Black people of Demerara met at Mahaica to plan a strike. The slave, Quamina, tried to keep the uprising peaceful. Advice was sought from the local Anglican priest, and considerable discussion took place among slaves, owners, priest, and the government, but the planters and governor felt threatened, and the rebellion was quickly put down by soldiers.Description of Plates notes that this scene was approved for its accuracy by participants in the event. Prince, the leader of the rebels, is shown waving a black flag. The plantations near this battle were Clonbrook, Beehive, Greenfield, Grove, and Unity.Bryant drew, engraved, and printed the images for this book. He also had to create the copper plates on which the designs were incised. He claims to have been the first to do this in the colony of Demerara.The plates do not appear in numerical order in the book, and plate 3 is lacking.
