notes:
|
Fort Royal was settled in 1762 by the French who used it as an operation center for their interests in the Caribbean. In 1801 by the decree of Napoleon Bonaparte, the name of Fort Royal was changed to Fort de France. This edition was compiled by Awnsham and John Churchill. The artist may be Johannes Kip (1663-1722), a Dutch draftsman and engraver, active in Great Britain, although this book was published after his death.
