notes: 
In the French and Indian or Seven Years' War, Amherst captured Louisbourg in 1758 and Montreal in 1760 to seal British control of Canada. In 1761 he became Governor General of North America. In 1763 on his return to England he was made Knight of the Order of the Bath, and in 1778 he was made commander in chief of the British army and Field Marshall.
