Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen (1604-1679), colonial governor of the Brazilian colony of the Dutch West Indische Compagnie, built the Friburgum Palace, "Castle of Freedom,"at Vrijburg; he built his summer residence at Boa Vista. The palace contained zoological and botanical gardens, as well as the first astronomical observatory and meteorological station to be built in the Americas. The artist was Frans Post (1612-1680) who came with forty-six other scholars, scientists, artists, and craftsmen in the company of Maurits.
