notes:
|
Depicts Melilot, the mythical capital of Apalache. This idealized view was meant to encourage Protestant settlement in America. According to Rochefort, Apalache, supposedly located in present-day Florida or Georgia, was the home of European Protestants who had been driven from their Virginia colony. Text describes religious practices that are illustrated. This may be the first printed illustration of a North American utopian city.
