Nicholas Ferrar, brother to John Ferrar who was an officer in the Virginia Company, was the founder of a religious community which lasted from 1626 to 1646.Francesco Bartolozzi under whom Tomkins studied was known for his mastery of the art of stipple engraving.The original painter of this portrait may be Cornelius Johnson, 1593-1661, a contemporary of Ferrar.
