notes:
A similar image in Raynal, Histoire philosophique, Geneva, 1780, is entitled, "Un Anglais de la Barbade, vend sa Maitresse." The image is probably based upon the story of Yarico, a native American woman, and Inkle, her lover and an English sailor, who allegedly duped her and sold her into slavery in Barbados. Raynal, an Enlightenment philosopher, wrote of the horrors of slavery in the colonies.
