notes:
This work describes the establishment of the first Moravian mission in the Danish West Indies. Oldendorp was in the West Indies from 1767 to 1769. Bethany, located near Cruz Bay on the west shore of St. John, was a small plantation purchased by the Brethren in 1745. The Brethren enlarged a "Negro house" to be a meeting house for the community.
