Described in Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virginia, the Natural Bridge and 157 acres of land surrounding it were purchased by Jefferson from the British crown in 1774. He and his heirs owned the land until 1833. Image placed horizontally on page. This book was one of the earliest illustrated amateur travel accounts devoted to North America.
