notes:
Wolfe first attempted to attack the French under the command of General Montcalm at Quebec from the front and was rebuffed. Hearing of a narrow path that led up to the Plains of Abraham above the town, he led his troops up at night. The brief battle which ensued on September 13, 1759, cost both generals their lives and the French their foothold in North America.
