notes:
Salvador, an important center of the lucrative sugar and slave trade of Brazil, was founded in 1549 by Thomé de Souza and was the first capital of Portuguese Brazil. No Spanish original of Coreal's voyages is known, and the identity of the author has been questioned. This book was later reprinted under titles: Recueil de voyages dans l'Amerique Mériodionale, Amsterdam, 1738, and Relations des voyages de François Coreal, Brussels, 1736.
