notes:
General Victor Collot fought under Rochambeau during the Revolution and later became governor of Guadeloupe. In 1796 he returned to North America to survey the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. His work had been printed before his death in 1805, but was suppressed for political reasons and not sold until 1826. The engraver is probably Jean Baptiste Pierre Tardieu, 1746-1816.
