Azara, a Spaniard, went to South America in 1781 as one of the commissioners to settle the boundary between the Spanish and Portuguese possessions. He stayed for twenty years. During that time, he became an authority on the natural and political history of Paraguay and the Plata regions with many newly discovered species being named after him.
