These snakes, one of which may be a Pelamis platurus or yellow-bellied sea snake, were included in a pamplet with the title, "Beschryving van twee verschillende en voor als nog zeer weinig bekende Platstaart Slangen, zynde de bruin-rug uit Mexico,"Amsterdam, 1774. The yellow-bellied sea snake can be found on both sides of the Pacific and is amphibious, laying its eggs on land. Arnout Vosmaer was director of the menageries founded in 1756 when the widow of William IV bought Vosmaer's collection. Many rare species were imported from places like Borneo, the Philippines, Surinam, South-Africa and Japan. Between 1766 and 1778 Vosmaer wrote separate pamphlets describing each rare animal. Each description was accompanied by a handcoloured print, usually made by Simon Fokke. Altogether 31 parts were published with 33 engravings. Image information taken from title page of each pamphlet.
