notes:
|
Fort William, said to be the site of the oldest continually used military fortification in British North America, was constructed on Castle Island in 1634. It was destroyed by the British when they evacuated Boston in 1776. In 1797 the fort was rebuilt and named Fort Independence. From 1785 until 1805 it served as a prison for prisoners sentenced to hard labor. Image placed horizontally on page.
