Portrait of Toussaint Louverture on horseback with sword. In the background are fortifications and a ship.
notes:
Louverture (ca. 1743-1803) was a leader of the Haitian Revolution. Originally named François Dominique Toussaint, he led the rebellion of slaves against the Spanish and French rulers of the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and Santo Domingo), successfully fought for the abolition of slavery, and briefly established a black-governed French protectorate. There are no existing portraits of Toussaint Louverture drawn from the life. This portrait was made as part of a series of portraits of generals of the French Revolution.
