Congress Hall was built by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1787 to 1789 as a county court house. It was occupied by Congress from 1790 to 1800 when Philadelphia was the nation's capital. The New Theatre was built in 1791 to 1794 , remodeled in 1805, and destroyed by fire in 1820.
