notes:
General John Burgoyne, leading a force of some some 9,000 men, including about 4,200 British regulars, 4,000 German troops, and several hundred Canadians and native Americans embarked from St. Johns, present-day St. Jean, Canada, on June 17, 1777. His mission was to proceed south through New York, capture Albany, and meet up with Sir Henry Clinton. His campaign was unsuccessful and the battle of Saratoga which sealed his defeat is considered the turning point of the American revolutionary war.
