Barlow was a member of the Hartford Wits, Ambassador to France under President Monroe, and died in Poland during an attempt to meet with Napoleon on Napoleon's retreat from Russia. Hesper is the evening star and is sometimes interpreted in the context of this poem as representing the western world.
